Dr. Anthony London returned to his hometown of Amsterdam in 1969 after completing his Cardiology training at Albany Medical Center. He was the first physician in Amsterdam with cardiology training. The concept of CCU’s was relatively new at that time. Dr. London shaped the care of heart patients at both St. Mary’s and Memorial Hospital. He created CCU’s and began education programs for the nurses at these institutions. He was able to reduce the heart attack mortality at those hospitals from 50% to 9% over his first few years in practice.
Dr. London assisted in the implantation of one of the first cardiac pacemakers in Amsterdam and became an expert in that area. He had a personal relationship with his patients who knew him as a neighbor and friend in addition to an astute diagnostician. He was committed to provide them with cutting edge care which included referring those who needed bypass surgery to Dr. George Green, one of the pioneers of the use of the internal mammary arteries.
Dr. London worked with Cardiology Associates of Schenectady from 1998 until his retirement in 2003.
