Dr. Gerald Matura was born and grew up in Schenectady.  He graduated from Downstate Medical College in 1943 then served in the army in Normandy. He was discharged as a Captain in 1947 and began a general practice on Michigan Avenue in Schenectady.

Dr. Matura went to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for training in Cardiology.  He returned to Schenectady in 1961 to a Cardiology office on Union Street in Schenectady.  He was a dedicated physician and family man.  He loved his time with his grandchildren who remember his infectious laugh.  He was affectionately called “Uncle Gerry” by the EKG technicians in the hospital.

Up until 1983 all Cardiologists in Schenectady had solo practices.  Dr. Matura forward thinking led to him recruiting Dr. John Nolan to join him in practice that year.  The practice grew with the addition of Dr. Robert Parkes in 1985.  Both remember Dr. Matura affectionately starting a conversation with them with “say, young fella.”

In 1987 Dr. Douglas Long joined the practice and Dr. Matura retired.  Even after his retirement, he remained a beloved memory his patients and staff.  Dr. Matura passed away at age 94 in 2012.
